After Hunter Sobel and Aaron Bernard made many bands with moderate success, they finally have the right people together. There was a time when Bernard and Sobel played together by themselves, at which time they decided on the band name Semi Automatic Slinkies. The two later wrote Semi Automatic, a song describing their history involving previous bands. Knowing that they would need more people to create a band they picked up Alec Husemeier, a friend from school. At that time they played mostly AC/DC covers. At first both Bernard and Husemeier played guitar in the band, before quickly realizing they needed to switch Bernard to bass. They then made a new setlist including songs: Baba O'Riley, Enter Sandman and Semi Automatic. For a while they practiced these songs, and later they decided on bringing another singer: Jake Hitzges. At the time Hitzges was the primary vocalist and rhythm guitarist. Bernard and Hitzges then worked together for a while, writing and learning songs. By that time Bernard and Hitzges started sharing vocal duties, and Hitzges switched to bass. After Sobel and Husemeier learned the songs they all met together and a new band was formed.
